Rankings of Teams - Criteria

Tiebreakers
The ranking of teams in group is determined by the following rules: (based on 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Regulations, Article 32.5)
  1. Points obtained by the team in all group matches.
  2. Goal difference (goals for minus goals against) in all group matches.
  3. Number of goals scored by the team in all group matches.
If position in group of two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings are determined by the following rules:
  1. Points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned.
  2. Goal difference (goals for minus goals against) in the group matches between the teams concerned.
  3. Number of goals scored in the group matches between the teams concerned.
If two or more teams are still equal, their rankings are determined by:
  1. Fair Play Points (see below)
  2. Drawing of lots by the FIFA Committee.

Fair Play Points

Fair Play Points are assigned as follows:
  • Penalty for first yellow card is -1 point (minus one point)
  • Penalty for indirect red card (second yellow card): -3 points (minus three points)
  • Penalty for direct red card: -4 points (minus four points)
  • Penalty for yellow card and direct red card: -5 points (minus five points)
First time in the FIFA World Cup history ranking of teams is determined by Fair Play Points in Group H. Japan and Senegal have same number of points, same number of goal difference and same number of goals scored. Japan have 4 yellow cards, Senegal 6, so Japan are the winners.
